Lake Superior is the largest in terms of volume. It is also the deepest and coldest of the five. Because of its size, Superior has a retention time of 191 years. Retention time is a measure based on the volume of water in the lake and the mean rate of outflow. Most of the Superior basin is forested, with little agriculture because of a cool climate and poor soils. The forests and sparse population result in relatively few pollutants entering Lake Superior, except through airborne transport
Lake Superior is the largest of the five Great Lakes of North America. (Lake Michigan and Lake Huron are traditionally regarded as two lakes, though hydrologically they form one, and if Michigan-Huron is considered as one lake, then Lake Superior is the second largest of the Great Lakes.) It is bounded to the north by Ontario, Canada and Minnesota, United States, and to the south by the U.S. states of Wisconsin and Michigan. It is the second largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area and is the world's third-largest freshwater lake by volume.[2]
